About the job

The opportunity has arisen to recruit two part time Finds Liaison Assistants (FLA) in North East England to work as part of the regional team lead by the North East’s Senior Finds Liaison Officer.

This post is for North East Museums and will be based at the Great North Museum: Hancock working for Newcastle City Council.

For information and to apply for the FLA post at Durham County Council Archaeology Section please see: North East Jobs – Durham County Council – About Us

The two organisations deliver the Portable Antiquities Scheme in partnership across the region. While each partner will be responsible for the recruitment of the FLA it will host, the recruitment process will be delivered in partnership. Candidates can apply for both posts if they wish, or just one. There will be no advantage/disadvantage to candidates either way. Please be advised, as this is a joint recruitment, your application will be available to both recruiting organisations, unless you request otherwise.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by the public, including metal detector users, to advance archaeological knowledge and to increase opportunities for active public involvement in heritage.

We are seeking a Finds Liaison Assistant (FLA) to work alongside and under the operational oversight of the Senior Finds Liaison Officer (SFLO) for the PAS in the Northeast region at North East Museums. They will also be involved in the operation of the PAS across the Northeast, working together with SFLO, and the FLA based in Durham County Council Archaeology Section, pursuant to the overall aim of advancing the understanding and knowledge of the historic environment in North East England.

The successful candidate will achieve this through encouraging participation in the PAS and facilitating the administration of the Treasure Act (1996), identifying and recording archaeological objects found by members of the public and making the results accessible to all through the PAS national database, and by making information available to the relevant local authority’s Historic Environment Record.

This is part-time role which equates to 29.6 hours per week (4 days) until March 2027. There is a likelihood that this may be extended beyond that point, funding dependent.

With relevant experience, the successful candidate will have an interest and enthusiasm for research and archaeology. They will be highly motivated, and possess excellent communication skills enabling them to work across the region in the promotion of the Scheme. They will engage in outreach activities designed to raise awareness of the importance of recording finds and the value of the information collected at the local, regional, and national level. The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience of processes and issues relating to metal-detecting, Treasure legislation and archaeology (in particular material culture), enabling them to co-ordinate the day-to-day work of the PAS in the Newcastle, under the overall direction of the SFLO.

The nature of the job means it will be necessary to attend events and/or meetings that may be held in the evening and at weekends at other sites and venues.
