Sunderland City Council is on an ambitious journey to modernise how we deliver public services. We are investing in digital, data and technology to create simpler, faster and more accessible services for our residents.

We are now looking for a Digital Lead – Planning Service Digitisation to play a key role in transforming our Planning Service through innovative, user-centred digital solutions.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the digitisation of Planning services, working at the intersection of service design, digital delivery, and data.

You will:

  • Lead the design, development and implementation of digital solutions that improve planning processes and customer journeys
  • Work closely with Planning colleagues to redesign services using digital, data and geospatial tools
  • Develop and maintain digital products that support end-to-end service delivery
  • Use geographic and spatial data to enhance insight and decision-making
  • Champion user-focused, accessible, and compliant digital services
  • Act as the bridge between service and technology, translating business needs into practical digital solutions.

You will also support the adoption of new ways of working, ensuring colleagues feel confident using digital tools and systems.

About you:

We are looking for someone who is passionate about improving services through digital and enjoys working collaboratively to make change happen.

You will bring:

  • Experience of developing and implementing digital products to improve processes and customer experience
  • Ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams to embed change
  • Strong communication skills, able to engage both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience or knowledge of GIS and spatial data
  • An understanding of digital best practice, accessibility and user-focused design
  • Experience supporting service redesign using data, insight and customer research
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver across a varied workload
